France considers increased naval activities around Iceland

In a prominent story on its front page, Morgunbladid quotes Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason saying that France is considering increasing its naval activities in the waters around Iceland.

Björn is currently visiting France and met with the French Minister of Defense, Michelle Alliot-Marie, in Paris yesterday.

“She said the French Navy had had a presence in the North-Atlantic for some time and they visited Iceland on a regular basis,” said Björn. “They would consider increasing the scope of their activity and extending their tours, usually conducted four times every year, and visit more frequently. She said France understood that security in the North-Atlantic would have to be maintained and France was willing to contribute towards that end,” said Björn to Morgunbladid.

Björn is the first Icelandic minister to visit the French Ministry of Defense. He was greeted with an honour guard. He remarked to Morgunbladid that the French military band which played the two nations anthems had had “good command” of the Icelandic anthem.
