Icelandic musician Sóley Stefánsdóttir’s song, ‘Pretty Face,’ has been played 14 million times since being published on YouTube in 2011 but is yet to generate any direct revenue from the video sharing website.
In an interview with visir.is, Sóley says that getting paid from YouTube is complicated. “My label, a German record company [Morr Music], is working on the case but says it is very difficult to get money from it. There needs to be, for example, an advert before the song. We could then maybe get 2 cents for every play or something,” she said, adding that it was of course a priceless promotion for her.
“This blessed song, was not supposed to be on the record, and my international concert tour has been a great success thanks to the song,” she elaborated.
Sóley said that they could ask YouTube to take the song down but they see no reason to do so at this time.
