Four Chess Players Share First Place in Reykjavík

Icelandic grandmaster Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson shares the top spot in the MP Reykjavík Open with Abhijeet Gupta from India, Ivan Sokolov from Ukraine and Yuriy Kuzubov from Bosnia. They all won seven out of nine games.

“It was a rather difficult tournament,” Stefánsson told Morgunbladid. “I managed to win the seventh and eighth rounds which secured first place. Luck is of course a factor too, although I have been lucky enough to win first place in the Reykjavík chess tournament for three years in a row.”

Stefánsson made a draw with Gupta in the final round. Stefánsson explained that top players usually don’t take high risks so late in the tournament—a loss could lower the price significantly. Stefánsson has now become Iceland’s highest ranking grandmaster.
