Four purebred Bengal cats were stolen from a shed at the farm Nátthagi in Ölfus yesterday. The cats’ owner, Ólafur Sturla Njálsson, who has bred Bengals at the farm for years, said he had noticed at 2 am that the lock on door to the shed to had been broken up.
The four cats that were kept in the shed, two males and two females, were gone, along with two cages. Ólafur told ruv.is that the cats were most likely stolen yesterday while he was away. The theft must have been organized, he reasoned, because the perpetrator(s) knew where the cats were kept.
There were footprints in the snow by the farm, as well as wheel marks made by a car. The person or persons responsible appear to have gotten the car stuck in the snow in the driveway because clothing, trousers and a bra, had been left behind, likely used for driving over for loosening the car.
Bengal cats can cost several hundred thousand ISK. The male cats were specially imported from Norway for breeding for ISK 800,000 (USD 6,000, EUR 5,200) each.
The theft has been reported to the police.
