Today marks the 40th anniversary of a major earthquake that hit Kópasker, Northeast Iceland in 1976. Many houses were destroyed and others damaged.
The earthquake was the culmination of a series of earthquakes which had shaken the area since December 20 the previous year, RÚV reports.
Residents ran outside and searched for loved ones. One resident described how he was thrown into the air and landed on his head.
The source of the earthquake, which measured over 6 on the Richter scale, was 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southwest of Kópasker.
There were roughly 100 residents in Kópasker at the time, mbl.is reports. Some were slightly hurt, and a few elderly people suffered a nervous breakdown.
Few photos are available of the damages, reportedly because flashcubes were not readily available to many people.
