Forty Thousand Sign EU Referendum Petition

Over 40,000 people, or 16.5 percent of the electorate, have signed a petition calling for a national referendum on whether Iceland should continue accession talks with the European Union.

A total of 70,000 people signed a petition in support of keeping the Reykjavík airport in its current location last year, making it the largest petition in Iceland.

The majority of the Icelandic population, or 82 percent, would like a referendum on whether Iceland should continue EU membership talks, according to the latest poll conducted by daily Fréttablaðið.

People have been protesting outside the parliament every day this week following suggestions by the government that the issue will not go to a referendum.
