Forty percent of the nation intends to eat fermented skata (skate), which smells strongly of ammonia, today, as is traditional in Iceland. Today marks Þorláksmessa, a day dedicated to St. Þorlákur, the patron saint of Iceland.
This was determined in a new survey by Marked and Media Research (MMR), ruv.is reports.
Forty-five percent of men aged 18-67 said they were having skate and 34 percent of women in that age group.
Capital residents seem less likely to feast on the disputed delicacy than people living elsewhere, 35 percent compared to 48 percent.
In the age group 50-67, 57 percent of respondents were planning a skate meal and 40 percent of those aged 30-49. Only 20 percent of younger respondents were planning the same.
