Forty-Five Years Since Westman Islands Eruption

Yesterday marked the 45th anniversary since the volcanic eruption on Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago.

The eruption began unexpectedly during the night of January 23, 1973. Most of the island’s roughly 5,500 inhabitants were evacuated by fishing ships which had luckily just returned to the island’s harbour.

The upcoming February issue of Iceland Review will revisit the monumental event and its aftermath.
