Former Sugarcubes Drummer Becomes Samurai

Former Sugercubes drummer and established Icelandic musician Sigtryggur Baldursson has been offered the title “Womax Samurai,” to help select the lineup for the 2008 Womax world music festival in Seville, Spain, in October.

Baldursson will become a member of a jury of seven experts that decide who will hold concerts, host discussions and screen films at the festival. Members of the jury are called samurais, as explained in an Iceland Music Export (IMX) press release.

Womax offered Baldursson a seat on the jury following an IMX promotion event at the 2007 Womax festival. IMX managing director Anna Hildur Hildibrandsdóttir visited the festival last year, along with Baldursson, who is a member of the board of IMX, and Óttar Felix Hauksson, owner of record label Zonet.

The offer to participate in the Womax jury is a recognition of Baldursson’s extensive knowledge of world music.
