The trial has been long awaited. It is the first time a politician in Iceland is put on trial for his alleged crimes as a politician. Geir Haarde was Prime Minister in Iceland from 2006 to 2009, first in a coalition with the Progressive Party, then with the Social Democrats. The charges come from the majority of Althingi, including some of his former coalition-partners.
On Tuesday, former Minister of Commerce Björgvin G. Sigurdsson and former Governor of the Central Bank and former PM, Davíd Oddsson, will testify.
