Former PM Davíð Oddsson to Run for President of Iceland

Davíð Oddsson, editor of Morgunblaðið newspaper and former prime minister of Iceland, has announced that he will run for president. Davíð made the announcement on Bylgjan radio a short time ago.

Davíð is a controversial figure in Icelandic politics.

Before becoming prime minister in 1991 (he served until 2004), he was Mayor of Reykjavík. From 2004 to 2005 he served as foreign minister. He then went on to become governor of the Central Bank of Iceland from 2005 to 2009. He was also chair of the Independence Party from 1991 to 2005.

Davíð is the 14th individual—a record number—to announce their candidacy for the June presidential election, Vísir reports.
