MP for the Left-Greens and Former Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson said in a parliamentary session today that Edward Snowden should be offered residence in Iceland, ruv.is reports.
Chair of the Judicial Affairs and Education Committee, Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir, said that an application for citizenship from Snowden had not been received and according to law, he would have to be in Iceland in order to apply.
On Tuesday it was reported that an application for asylum in Snowden’s name was faxed to the Icelandic Embassy in Moscow where he is currently located.
Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA, leaked information from the NSA and CIA, as has been widely reported by the international media.
