Former Icelandic Policeman Arrested in Argentina

An Icelandic man in his fifties, who used to be a police officer, is currently in prison in Argentina after being arrested with five kilos of cocaine at the Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires. The man was traveling to Spain where he has resided for the past years.

According to information from the international division of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police released on Monday, the man was arrested on October 13 and has been in prison since, Morgunbladid reports.

The National Commissioner was informed of the man’s position by Interpol and will continue to follow it but not interfere unless it is requested. His case has not been put on trial yet.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the case is solely in the hands of Argentinean authorities unless Icelandic participation is requested.

However, the ministry’s citizen service usually monitors the affairs of Icelandic citizens arrested abroad, making sure their rights are being respected.
