Former Economics Minister to Run for Party Chair

The position is currently held by Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, who was voted chair in March 2009, but she recently announced that she will retire from politics after the current term comes to an end next spring.

Árni Páll is the first to announce his candidacy but others have been named as likely candidates: Dagur B. Eggertsson, Guðbjartur Hannesson, Helgi Hjörvar, Katrín Júlíusdóttir and Sigríður Ingibjörg Ingadóttir.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson has also been mentioned in that context and he has been encouraged to run. However, he has stated that he isn’t interested in chairing the Social Democrats, Fréttablaðið reports.
