Former CEO of Icelandair joining Finnair board

Sigurdur Helgason, the former CEO of Icelandic airline Icelandair, will join the board of directors of the Finnish airline Finnair at the company’s general meeting today.

According to Fréttabladid, Helgason’s seat on the board is part of an agreement between the management of FL Group, Finnair and the Finnish state, which is the largest shareholder in the company.

Iceland-based investment company FL Group is the second largest shareholder in Finnair with a share of 22.3 percent.

Hannes Smárason, the CEO of FL Group, had initially requested a seat for himself on Finnair’s board of directors, but both the Finnish state and the management of Finnair were against it.

FL Group’s representatives say all parties are satisfied with the decision to appoint Helgason.
