Foreign Tourist Dies in South Iceland Accident

death-announcementsA foreign tourist who was in his twenties died when a car, in which he was a passenger, overturned east of Kúðafljót river close to the road to Skaftártungur near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, south Iceland, shortly before 11 am yesterday morning.

A Coast Guard helicopter was called out because of the accident. The tourist’s traveling companions, a man and a woman, suffered minor injuries, Morgunblaðið reports.

They were taken to the national hospital, Landspítali, in Reykjavík where their injuries were tended to and they were provided with crisis counseling.

According to information from the police in Hvolsvöllur, the man who died was not wearing a seatbelt. This is the third traffic fatality in Iceland this year.
