Foreign Minister Says he will fight for Wikileaks MP

Iceland’s Minister of Foreign affairs Össur Skarphédinsson says that he will fight for Icelandic MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir. He says he will call the US Ambassador to a meeting in the ministry. In an interview with RÚV State Radio Skarphédinsson said that Icelandic authorities will defend Jónsdóttir like all Icelandic citizens. He said it looked like the US authorities were attacking an Icelandic MP for no reason.

Other politicians commented to Árni Thór Sigurdsson of the Left Green party said that the case seemed to be very peculiar. “I think those who make such demands are on thin ice,” he said. “We need to know what they are really asking for.”

Chairman of the Independence Party Bjarni Benediktsson, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee of Althingi said that he was not surprised that the American government would use all possible resources to solve the case, if they tell Wikileaks is equivalent to spying. Benediktsson said that he had not heard from Birgitta Jónsdóttir what it is that she demands. “It seems to me that this is a case between the US government and an American company.”
