Foreign Minister insults Icelandic feminists

The Feminist Association of Akureyri, Iceland, regrets comments made by Foreign Minister Geir H. Haarde at a meeting last Friday on the US withdrawal of its forces from Iceland and the opportunities the withdrawal would present to Icelanders. According to Morgunbladid, Haarde used the following metaphor: “It is not always possible to go home with the best looking girl at the dance, but another one will serve the same purpose.”

According to a press release the Feminist Association of Akureyri is curious to know what is “excellency” the Foreign Minister meant with this metaphor.

“As an official of the nation, Geir H. Haarde should watch is words and be a good example to others. The Feminist Association of Akureyri would like to draw his attention to his clumsy wording – not only does it diminish women but himself as well.”

Haarde is Chairman of the Independence Party. From 1998 to 2005 he served as Minister of Finance and since September 2005 he has served as Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
