Foreign Minister Challenges Minister of Industry

Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir cycles to work every day, which she finds a comfortable mode of transportation. Gísladóttir now challenges fellow member of the Social Democrats and Minister of Industry Össur Skarphédinsson to do the same.

“I began cycling during the bicycle week [in May],” Gísladóttir told Morgunbladid. “I registered for one of the teams which then ended up winning the competition! I then thought to myself that it wasn’t enough to cycle only during that week and decided to continue.”

Apart from being an easy way to travel short distances, the foreign minister likes cycling because it is both an environmentally-friendly and an inexpensive mode of transportation. Yet only few ministers of Iceland’s cabinet can be spotted cycling to work.

Therefore Gísladóttir urges her colleagues to follow her example, especially fellow Social Democrat and Minister of Industry Össur Skarphédinsson. “I challenge Össur! It is so short for him to cycle to work from Vesturbaerinn [western Reykjavík].”

The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland organizes a special “Bicycle Week” every year to encourage people to cycle to work. Work places then form teams and compete against each other.
