Bjarni Gudjónsson scored a highly controversial winning goal in a game between ÍA Akranes and Keflavík on Wednesday and has been accused of poor sportsmanship. Keflavík’s supporters are furious.
Keflavík kicked the ball out of the field so an injured ÍA player could be tended to and expected to get the ball back, Fréttabladid reports.
Gudjónsson said he had meant to kick the ball back to Keflavík, which is standard practice in such situations, but had scored a goal instead – by mistake. Gudjónsson said he had wanted to allow Keflavík to score a goal to even the scores, but that his manager, Gudjón Thórdarson, had refused.
After the game Keflavík’s players chased Gudjónsson into the dressing room where there was a struggle. Gudjónsson has apologized for scoring the goal, but Keflavík’s supporters don’t believe it was a mistake and accuse him of being dishonest.
Gudjónsson’s wife has even become involved in the quarrel. Gudjónsson said Keflavík’s supporters verbally attacked her in front of their children, but the people of Keflavík say his wife started the quarrel.
