Two men were acquitted in a curious court case involving a flipped car and a group of football fans, RÚV reports. A group had gathered at a local café in Selfoss, South Iceland to watch Iceland play England in the 2016 UEFA European Championships. Iceland’s victory in the match secured its first-ever quarter-final game in a major tournament. What followed was, in one of the defendants’ words, a “bizarre life experience.”
The historic victory seems to have been too much to handle for the fans, who came up with the idea to flip a car which was parked outside the café. Several began lifting the car until its wheels came off the ground. As more bystanders joined the group, the car was lifted higher in the air. A few participants, including one of the defendants, sustained back injuries, while others began to protest the activity and try to bring the participants—and the car—back to earth. One enthusiastic participant, however, made a running start and managed to push the car onto its side.
One of the defendants stated he never intended to damage the car or cause bodily harm and said he pulled himself away from the action when the car started to come off the ground. As no witnesses could confirm at which point the defendants had stepped away from the vehicle, the South Iceland District Court dismissed the case.
