Football Affects Wedding Plans

It looks like Icelanders may hesitate to tie the knot between June 10 and July 10 next year. Why? Their guests will have something better to do than come to the wedding.

The recent success of the Icelandic national men’s football team may have unforeseen effects on many people’s lives, according to The team recently qualified for the UEFA EURO 2016 Championship, which takes place in France June 10-July 10 next year. As a result, football fans will be preoccupied with their team during this time. contacted three churches to ask about bookings. At Háteigskirkja church, no bookings had been made for Saturdays, June 11, 18, and 25, which is unusual. Before and after the championship, though, bookings were normal. A similar situation appeared to be at Grafarvogskirkja church, while 11 weddings had been booked at Fríkirkja church during the championship.

One couple that got engaged last summer, Hilmar Gunnarsson and Oddný Þóra Logadóttir, decided to postpone their wedding, planned for June 11. Many of their friends are going to France.

“You can’t keep 100 people in a church when the Icelandic men’s team plays its first game at a major championship. Besides, it could affect the ambiance a lot if Iceland lost,” Hilmar stated.

Særún Jónsdóttir was not happy about postponing her wedding at Lindakirkja church, but since her financé’s brother is a professional football player, there was no alternative. Særún and Haukur Valgeir, her fiancé, had booked June 18 for their wedding, but after the football results were known, the minister told them he would possibly be leaving for France.

The minister at Lindakirkja church, Guðni Már Harðarson, told he’s not the only minister thinking about going to France. There are many football fans among them. He says there have been instances at his church of people shouting the results of a football game when the wedding march begins.

Clearly, football fans are not going to a wedding June 10-July 10, 2016. They’re going to have a ball elsewhere.
