Food Producer Sued for Lack of Meat in Pie

The office of the Chief of Police in Borgarnes, West Iceland, has filed charges against local company Kræsingar ehf., formerly Gæðakokkar ehf., for deceiving consumers.

An analysis by Matís – Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D in early 2013 found that there was no meat in a pie produced by Gæðakokkar, while the label stated that it included 30 percent beef, visir.is reports.

The company’s representatives had no explanation for the lack of meat.

According to the 11th article of the law on food products, it is illegal “to serve or distribute food products in a manner deceptive to the consumer regarding origin, kind, quality, composition, volume, nature or effect.”

The charge demands that the company be fined and cover all legal costs.
