Flood Sweeps Away Ring Road

Ring Road One is closed between Höfn and Djúpivogur due to flooding, RÚV reports. The road is expected to remain closed until noon at the earliest.

The flooding was caused by a violent storm which swept across the country yesterday. The Road and Coastal Administration reports flooding on at least two other stretches of road in East Iceland. A rock avalanche in the region blocked a road but has since been cleared.

Reynir Gunnarsson, operations manager for the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration in Höfn, described the damage. “There is a 20 metre section of road gone and a strong stream of water flowing over it. It’s still raining a lot. A big chunk of the road is gone.”

Travellers are advised to exercise caution due to elevated water levels in the region and check road conditions before heading out.
