Hannes Smárason, chairman of FL Group and Pálmi Haraldsson, co-owner of Fons, which owns budget airline Iceland Express and recently acquired the Danish airlines Sterling and Maersk Air, met in Copenhagen yesterday morning to discuss the possibility of of FL Group purchasing Sterling, reports Morgunbladid today. Neither Hannes nor Pálmi would comment on the discussion to Morgunbladid.
“The only thing I can say at this stage, is that we were exchanging views and have decided to meet again after the weekend,” said Pálmi.
Hannes told the Morgunbladid, ” We presented our view and discussed the issue. Then we decided to review the issues over the weekend and meet again next week.”
Morgunbladid reports that Icelandic and Danish bankers were also at the meeting.
According to the Icelandic Broadcasting Service, RÚV, the Icelandic Stock Exchange received an announcement on September 13 that the boards of FL Group and Fons would shortly begin discussions regarding the possibility of FL Group purchasing Sterling and Maersk Air. According to Morgunbladid, FL Group representatives met with Sterling and Maersk Air in Copenhagen in mid September.
