Five Icelanders to Compete in Winter Olympics

Five Icelanders will be competing in this year’s winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, RÚV reports, and all of their events will, naturally, be broadcast on RÚV and RÚV2.

All of the five athletes are skiers. Elsa Guðrún Jónsdóttir, Isak Stianson Pedersen, and Snorri Einarsson are cross-country skiers, while Freydís Halla Einarsdóttir and Sturla Snær Snorrason are Alpine skiers.

Iceland has never medalled in a Winter Olympic event, but Icelanders have won individual medals in Athletics (Vilhjálmur Einarsson; Silver in Men’s Triple Jump, Melbourne, 1956 and Vala Flosadóttir; Bronze in Women’s Pole Vault, Sydney, 2000), Judo (Bjarni Friðriksson; Bronze in Men’s 95kg, Los Angeles, 1984). The Icelandic Men’s National Handball team also famously brought home the silver medal from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

RÚV will broadcast these athletes’ events on the following schedule:

Sun. 11. February 6:15 AM – Men’s 30 km Cross-Country (Snorri Einarsson)
Mon. 12. February 1:15 AM– Women’s Giant Slalom (Freydís Halla Einarsdóttir)
Tue. 13. February 8:30 AM – Men’s Cross-Country Sprint (Snorri Einarsson and Isak Pedersen)
Wed. 14. February 1:15 AM – Women’s Slalom (Freydís Halla Einarsdóttir)
Thurs. 15. February 6:30 AM – Women’s 10 km Cross-Country (Elsa Guðrún Jónsdóttir)
Fri. 16. February 6:00 AM – Men’s 15 km Cross-Country (Snorri Einarsson)

Sat. 24. February 5:00 AM – Men’s 50 km Cross-Country (Snorri Einarsson)
