Five Hours of Blackout in Iceland’s Capital Region

Many companies were forced to close due to a blackout which lasted for five ours on Monday afternoon in Mosfellsbaer, Kjalarnes, Grafarvogur and Grafarholt in the outskirts of Reykjavík.

According to Reykjavík Energy, such a long-lasting failure in electricity has not taken place in the capital region in 20 years, Morgunbladid reports.

The main power line by the Spöng neighborhood in Grafarvogur suffered a failure around noon. Following the failure, the local system suffered a blow so the electricity was cut to the entire northern capital region.

It was not possible to make use of a different power line while the failure was being fixed, so the region’s nearly 40,000 inhabitants had to endure a blackout until the failure was repaired five hours later.
