Five men who were arrested last weekend, suspected of having raped a woman in her twenties, were all released from custody yesterday. One of them has confessed to having had sexual intercourse with the woman, but claimed it had been with her permission.
Two of the men have been barred from traveling out of the country. The woman, who works for a consulting agency, is only in Iceland for a few weeks. They are all of foreign origin, Morgunbladid reports.
According to superintendent Sigurbjörn Vídir Eggertsson, the investigation is still in progress. Police has ruled out that three of the men who were charged for having participated in the rape were guilty. Eggertsson said it is impossible to prove whether the woman had been drugged.
The woman had been out on the town in Reykjavík on Saturday night and lost track of her friends. She went to the apartment where she was staying but couldn’t get inside because one of her friends had the keys.
Then a man came who claimed he was an acquaintance of a woman who the alleged victim had met during the night. The man told her that she would be safe in his apartment and she followed him inside.
He offered her a mattress to sleep on and she went to sleep fully dressed. After that there are gaps in the woman’s memory. She vaguely remembers that the man had lain down beside her and kissed her on the neck. She shoved him away and went back to sleep.
The next thing she remembers is that another man was having sexual intercourse with her in another place in the apartment. She was naked below the waist. She then jumped to her feet, got dressed and ran out of the apartment.
