Five Arrested in Bank Robbery Case

Five men are in police custody in connection with yesterday’s armed bank robbery at Landsbanki on Borgartún, RÚV reports. RÚV’s sources state that one of the bank robbers is among them.

He was arrested after police received a tip. Police issued a statement yesterday that weapons used during the robbery had been found: a replica of a handgun and a knife. One of the robbers left a fingerprint on the teller’s counter as he jumped over it and pushed her, according to

Police immediately suspected who were involved. Both men have a criminal record.

Information RÚV has obtained suggests that a man arrested in Stigahlíð last night is one of the suspected robbers. Police also discovered a substantial amount of cannabis during a house search.

The men drove a white van to the Hlíðir neighborhood where they were seen running toward Öskjuhlíð forested hill on which Perlan restaurant sits. The Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter was called out to illuminate the area to facilitate the police search.

The van had been stolen in Hafnarfjörður around 10:30 am. Jarek Kuczynski, owner of Hverafold Bakery, was delivering bread to Mini Market on Reykjavíkurvegur and left the keys in the car while he ran inside. “They no doubt drove around with bread and Berliners,” he told Vísir.

This is the first armed bank robbery in Iceland in five years. Landsbanki CEO Steinþór Pálsson told reporters yesterday the amount stolen was insubstantial. Banks make sure that tellers never keep large amounts of cash at their desks.
