Fishermen Negotiate Wages

Fishermen and owners of fishing companies convene at the office of the state mediator this afternoon for wage negotiations, Vísir reports. This will be their first meeting after fishermen voted with a large majority last week to call a strike for an unlimited length of time, starting November 10.

There are many areas of disagreement, but fishermen stress the importance of equalizing fish prices, and addressing manning problems on the fishing vessels.

Fishermen would, furthermore, like to be compensated for the fact that they no longer enjoy a special discount on taxes. They demand more funds for the purchase of clothing and the repeal of a rule that requires them to take a ten percent pay cut the first seven years after the fishing company they work for buys a new fishing vessel.
