Fishermen’s pay decreasing

RÚV is reporting that fishermen’s wages have decreased by 25% over the last three years, according to the Union of Icelandic Fishermen and Sailors. The decrease is due to the fact that they now receive on average 25% lower price for their fish.

The Congress wants the government to decrease spending because the strength of the króna is having such a negative effect on the state of the fishing industry.

If the present situation continues, it will be hard to find people to go to sea, since well paid jobs on land are also available. There are fewer and fewer experienced fishermen and it is becoming more common that ships cannot go out due to a people shortage.
