A fisherman died after falling overboard from the trawler Hrafn GK 111 on Saturday evening. The ship was located 67 nautical miles southwest of Reykjanes peninsula when the accident occurred.
Crew members had problems helping the man back on board. A Coast Guard helicopter took off at 11:18 pm and shortly afterwards the captain announced that the man had been rescued from the ocean and that resuscitation attempts had begun, Morgunbladid reports.
The physician on board the helicopter was in direct contact with the captain but when he arrived at midnight the man was pronounced dead. The cause of the accident is unknown but it is under investigation at the Icelandic Marine Accident Investigation Board.
