Fish Head(ache)

Fish heads have been such a headache for the residents of Akranes lately. The town council voted Tuesday not to process an application from HB Grandi for a new, controversial facility for drying fish heads, according to RÚV.

As we reported earlier, the residents of Akranes have long complained of the foul-smelling operation which HB Grandi wants to expand. At the council meeting, it was decided at the last minute to request further information from the company and refer the matter back to the planning and environmental board.

Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir, town council member and former minister of health, says the application from HB Grandi was a poorly planned zoning suggestion, which could have caused the town tremendous trouble. She believes the operation must be moved from Akranes because of the foul smell. “For me, an adult, the smell is tolerable, but the young people can’t stand this smell,” she tells RÚV.

HB Grandi now has a licence to dry 170 tons of fish heads a week at the two facilities it currently operates in Akranes, but the company would like to triple that amount.
