First WOW Cyclothon Team Crosses Finish Line

The team Piltarnir (“The Lads”) was the first to cross the finish line in the first annual WOW Cyclothon around Iceland by the Harpa concert and conference center in Reykjavík at noon yesterday.

They completed the race of 1,332 kilometers in 40 hours and 57 minutes, which is more than seven hours shorter than what they had aimed for, Morgunblaðið reports.

Piltarnir were followed by two teams of Miðaldra skrifstofumenn (“Middle-Aged Office Workers”) and the team of WOW Air, the cyclothon’s organizers.

The conditions for the final leg were ideal, easterly winds along the entire southern coast all through the night and up until noon the next day.

The teams are all raising funds for the charity Barnaheill – Save the Children Iceland.

The team Fjögur í veislu (“Four in a Party”) has raised the highest amount, approximately ISK 430,000 (USD 3,400, EUR 2,700) this morning, even though they placed last in the race.

“We’re not ashamed. It’s all about having fun and we have. We urge people to support us and have promised to dance to Abba in full gear when we cross the finish line if we reach half a million,” vowed team member Andrea Þóra Ásgeirsdóttir.

The members of Fjögur í veislu are not experienced bikers—some of them bought their bicycles only one month ago. “We’re mainly participating for the cause. We didn’t expect to have to cycle uphill this much. But we’re great downhill,” Andrea added.

The fundraising will continue until 4 pm today. The total amount raised had exceeded ISK 2.5 million (USD 20,000, EUR 16,000) this morning.
