First Woman Wins High School Quiz

The final was very exciting, ending with Kvennó beating MR by one point, 22-21. Haraldsdóttir told Morgunbladid that she and her teammates, Bjarki Freyr Magnússon and Bjarni Lúdvíksson, had prepared well, “we have practiced almost daily since January.”

When asked what the key to victory in Gettu betur is, Haraldsdóttir replied, “It’s a lot about the nerves, I think, to stay focused.” As to how it feels like being the first woman on a winning team, she simply said it was about time.

Gettu betur was first held in 1986 and became an instant hit both among students and viewers. Each secondary school in Iceland can enter one team in the competition, which is comprised of three of the school’s students.

The preliminary quiz is broadcast on the radio with the eight-team final shown live on prime time television on Saturday evenings.

MR is by far the most victorious school, first winning the trophy in 1988 and then standing undefeated from 1993 to 2004 and again from 2007 and until now, as stated on the Icelandic version of Wikipedia.
