First Woman Becomes Cathedral Priest in Iceland

Rev. Anna Sigrídur Pálsdóttir, a priest in Grafarvogskirkja Church in Reykjavík, will on October 1 become the first ever woman to serve as a priest in Reykjavík Cathedral. A cathedral committee appointed her yesterday.

Seven applied for the position. “It is in many ways different to what I’ve been doing here in Grafarvogskirkja Church for the past ten years,” Pálsdóttir told Morgunbladid. “In Grafarvogskirkja the congregation is very young […], so there are many people with children, baptisms, religious education for children and confirmation courses.”

The congregation of Reykjavík Cathedral is older and the Cathedral serves a certain public role as the church of the Bishop of Iceland.

New priests are inaugurated in the Cathedral, the Church Congress is opened there and the Cathedral is responsible for services in relation to the opening of the Althingi parliament.
