First Winter Snow Falls in Reykjavík

The first snow in Iceland’s capital this winter fell yesterday. The snowfall caused slippery road conditions and drivers whose cars had summer tires ran into difficulty. Approximately 30 traffic accidents had been reported to the police by 10 pm last night.

The road conditions in the capital are still slippery, as are the main highways leading into Reykjavík, across Hellisheidi towards Selfoss and on Reykjanesbraut leading to Keflavík International Airport, ruv.is reports.

No accidents have been reported so far this morning but according to visir.is, the police and the Icelandic Road Administration have issued a warning to commuters due to icy road conditions in the capital and on most highways.

However, in the lowlands in south and southeast Iceland most roads are clear.
