First Winter Snow Falls on Iceland

Reykjavík residents woke up to a white blanket of snow covering the ground this morning, as inhabitants in other parts of Iceland have done since Wednesday morning. Snow began falling in Iceland’s capital last night.

The early snowfall created slippery road conditions and many collisions were reported in the capital region last night. At one point buses in Kópavogur stopped driving, Morgunbladid reports.

The Icelandic Road Administration has begun labeling highland roads as “impassible” and travelers are asked to be careful. Click here for a map of road conditions.

The winter seems to be arriving early this year. According to the calendar, it doesn’t begin officially until October 25.
