First Winter Snow Falls in Akureyri

The inhabitants in Akureyri, north Iceland, woke up to a white cityscape this morning. It started snowing last night. Drivers had to dust off their cars and scrape the frost off their car windows, the local police revealed.

The town’s streets are slippery as the temperature is just at the freezing point, visir.is reports.

Locals are wondering whether the weather can be blamed on the snow production in Mt. Hlídarfjall which began in yesterday—did they turn the spouts the wrong way?

The conditions are favorable for snow production and the ski resort’s managers plan to open the slopes in about a month. Last winter’s skiing season in Hlídarfjall was record-breaking.
