According to Hrafnkell Marínósson, chairman of the ocean swimming committee of the Icelandic Swimming Association, organizing a championship in ocean swimming has been discussed for the past two years, Fréttabladid reports.
“It will be held now in connection with cooperation between the Swimming Association and Securitias on swimming across the English Channel,” Marínósson explained.
Last year Benedikt Hjartarson became the first Icelander to swim across the English Channel.
Tomorrow’s tournament will be held at the Nauthólsvík thermal beach in Reykjavík. Contestants will swim either one or four kilometers.
