First steps towards doubling of hazardous roads

Minister of Transport Sturla Bödvarsson announced this week that he had given the Iceland Road Administration permission to begin preparations for tendering bids for doubling Vesturlandsvegur and Sudurlandsvegur.

The two roads, leading from Reykjavík to Borgarnes, north of the city, and Selfoss, southeast of the city, are notoriously dangerous for motorists and have claimed many lives.

The Ministry of Transport will appoint a special board to supervise the project, work on a draft on how to finance the road improvements, how to execute the operations and cooperate with the local authorities involved.

The Ministry has not yet decided whether the project should be undertaken by private companies who would charge road tariffs, a cooperation between the state and private parties or undertaken fully by the state.
