The lineup includes both foreign and domestic acts. The best known visiting artists are Squarepusher, James Blake, Modeselektor, Simian Mobile Disco, Trentemøller and the collaborative Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

As for Icelandic musicians, GusGus, Ásgeir Trausti, Retro Stefson, Ólafur Arnalds, Ghostigital, Samaris, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Sóley, Bloodgroup, Sin Fang, Human Woman and Mugison are among performers.

Sónar – International Festival of Advanced Music was first held in Barcelona in 1994 where its 20th anniversary will be celebrated next June. The festival’s popularity has grown year by year and spread to other countries, Morgunblaðið reports.

The festival is dedicated to futuristic sounds, experimental music and new media; through the years, artists such as Underworld, Twin, Janelle Monáe, Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Beasty Boys, Björk and Sigur Rós have performed there.

The goal is for Sónar Reykjavík to become an annual event.
