First Snowfall, then People Fall

Sunday morning, the snow fell in record amounts; the following days, it was the residents’ turn to fall in record numbers.

The days following Sunday’s record February snow fall in the Reykjavík metropolitan area have been exceptionally busy for paramedics. Tuesday and yesterday saw more than 100 ambulance trips each, RÚV reports. Numerous pedestrians have lost their balance on icy sidewalks, and drivers have lost control of their vehicles.

The Reykjavík Fire Department warns pedestrians of the danger presented by icicles and snow overhangs on roofs, which can fall down anytime.

In Reykjavík, dozens of workers are involved in snow removal, using about 40 snow removal vehicles. All main roads were cleared at the beginning of the week, but residential streets and sidewalks are still being plowed. The plan is to complete the task before the weekend.
