First New Lighthouse in 30 Years Approved

Construction plans for a new lighthouse on Sæbraut street in Reykjavík have been approved. It will be the first new lighthouse to come into use in the country in over 30 years. RÚV reported first.

The lighthouse is intended to replace the one currently on top of the School of Navigation in Reykjavík. That lighthouse has largely been obstructed by the tall buildings constructed on Borgartún street before the banking collapse.

The new lighthouse will be constructed by the sea above street level and pedestrians will be able to walk around it on all sides. Construction is scheduled to start next month and is expected to be completed by June.
