First Lambs of the Season Butchered

The first lambs of the season were butchered at Hvammstangi, a small town in Northwest Iceland, yesterday. Six hundred animals were butchered and all the meat will be sent fresh to the United States where it will be distributed by Whole Foods Markets.

The meat is expected in stores next week, mbl.is reports.

The slaughterhouse in Hvammstangi has been exporting lamb for several years. The export began at 25 tons several summers ago but has been vastly increasing ever since.

Magnús Freyr Jónsson, the manager of the slaughterhouse, expects lamb export to stand at 250 tons at the end of this season.
