First Icelandic Kayaker Completes Journey around Iceland

Kayaker Gísli H. Fridgeirsson became the first Icelander to circle the island in a kayak when he completed his journey at the cape Geldinganes in Reykjavík yesterday afternoon. Fridgeirsson embarked on his journey on June 1.

Fridgeirsson described his journey as an adventure. “It was both demanding and exciting and I was given the opportunity to get to know the country from the viewpoint of those who rowed for fishing in years past,” he told Fréttabladid. “I’m very satisfied and feel as if my achievement adds a certain value to life.”

The kayaker said he was never in danger although he did encounter minor difficulties. He said that in order to complete a journey like this in one piece one must be mindful to not risk encountering bad weather, but rather wait until it blows over.

Fridgeirsson was accompanied by animals of different species and he said that he hadn’t perceived their presence as threatening at any time. “The whales watched me from a suitable distance and stayed behind me rather than in front and I was also followed by seals and seabirds.”
