The whaling ship Hvalur 9 hunted its first fin whale of the 2014 season yesterday.
Whaling boats left Reykjavík on Sunday, saw no whales on Monday and caught one on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, which was brought to the whaling station in Hvalfjörður, yesterday.
As soon as the whale had been caught, a hundred staff members were called to work at the station. Once the whale was brought ashore it took professionals only about an hour to butcher the giant animal and get the meat into cold storage, Vísir.is reports.
Iceland has allowed a quota of 154 fin whale catches every year since 2011, but that number has never been reached. All fin whale meat is exported to Japan.
