Fires in Reykjavík and Westman Islands

By Iceland Review

A 13-year-old boy has confessed to setting an abandoned house on Skólavördurstígur in Reykjavík on fire on Sunday and a house on Hverfisgata in mid-September. On Friday the fish liver oil factory Lifrasamlagid in the Westman Islands was destroyed in fire.

Two other boys were arrested in relation to the Reykjavík arsons and their cases have now been sent to child protection authorities, Morgunbladid reports.

In the Westman Islands local police authorities were assisted by specialists in fires from the Capital Region Police in investigating the source.

Investigators were unable to determine how the fire started as not much was left of the scene. The origin of the fire remains unknown but nothing is ruled out.

In recent years, the Westman Islands have been plagued by arsonists.
