Firefighters Help Trapped Swan

By Iceland Review

Firefighters were called out to the University of Iceland campus earlier this week to save a swan that had landed on the balcony of one of the student apartments and was unable to find its way back to the Reykjavík pond.

“It is among the more unusual projects we’ve had,” Erling Júlíusson, duty officer at the capital region fire department, told Morgunbladid. “At least I cannot remember another incident like this during all the years that I’ve been in the fire brigade.”

Júlíusson said the swan had been trapped on the balcony for some time before the fire department was contacted because the inhabitants of the apartment had not been at home when the swan landed on the balcony.

“We got hold of it and drove it in the fire truck down to the pond where we let it go,” Júlíusson explained. The swan was not happy about the firefighters’ intervention and hissed at them. But it did appear relieved about being free at last and seemed uninjured.
