TV Líf, the only Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter equipped for fire fighting, has been dumping water on the site.
According to Deputy Fire Chief, Jökul Björnsson, the source of the fire is unknown, but it is believed to have been set deliberately. The local fire department asks people to take care when lighting fires as the area is suffering from severe drought.
Last month was reportedly the driest June in Stykkishólmur (on the Snæfellsnes peninsula) since 1857.
